Understanding the Willamette Valley’s AVAs through Pinot noir
Since the beginning of Oregon’s modern wine industry, Pinot noir has been the cornerstone wine grape that propelled it onto the world stage. In fact, Pinot noir represents more than 75% of the acres under vine in the Willamette Valley, the highest concentration of a single variety in one region anywhere in the world. With this much investment in one grape variety, differentiation not only between Oregon and the rest of the world, but also between the different sub-AVAs of the Willamette Valley has become a focal topic of discussion and emphasized our regional mission to produce terroir-driven wines.
In this tasting seminar, we will discuss the history leading to the dominance of Pinot noir in the Willamette Valley, the go-to clones, the collaborative approach of the industry, the characteristics of each of Willamette Valley’s sub-AVAs and how their unique sense of place is expressed in the wines through some of the best terroir-driven examples of Pinot noir from each AVA.
